The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of the two small Cabernet vineyards in Napa Valley that have become consistent sources for us over the past three harvests. The majority of the fruit and the vineyard we have been working with the longest is on the appellation border between Rutherford and St. Helena, on the western side of the valley near the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains. This vineyard always brings a rich, juicy black cherry core to the wine, but also shows a spicy, tobacco character in many warmer vintages like 1999. Our newest Cabernet vineyard is located north of Calistoga near Chateau Montelena off Tubbs Lane. It is a small vineyard that we get the entire production from. A whopping 4 tons, or about enough grapes to increase the total by 200 cases. That vineyard always has deep plum fruit with cocoa and often coffee notes. The 1999 also has 11% Merlot from a vineyard in Carneros that I think boosts the brightness in the fruit to just the right level to make this a wine that will be very juicy and lush to enjoy. The texture of the wine is rich but soft. The tannins are present but also ripe and soft.
