In 1999, Mother Nature turned
our Dutton Ranch Chardonnay into something very special.
We waited well into October for flavors to mature in the
grapes before picking. The cool, coastal Russian River climate
is the perfect place for Chardonnay to ripen
very slowly,
so the fruit remains on the vine for an extended time to
develop rich, complex flavors. The grapes for this wine
were picked at sunrise and taken directly to the winery
to be whole cluster pressed while the fruit was still very
cool, beginning a long, cold fermentation process to preserve
and capture all the treasures of the fruit. We fermented
all the wine in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new.
The wines rich, buttery texture and flavors from full
malolactic fermentation layer well with the crisp citrus
and tropical qualities of the fruit. The final blend was
assembled just before bottling to create amazing balance,
complexity and length. Aromas and flavors of lemon custard,
gala apple and pears are wrapped in a spicy, toasty finish
and a rich, silky texture. Only 99 cases were produced.
